Super Bowl Showdown: Can the Eagles Spoil a Chiefs' Three-Peat?

How many millions on this sporting planet will switch on, sit down – and jump up and down – on Sunday, 9th February, for the Super Bowl? Philadelphia Eagles take on Kansas City Chiefs, who are going for an unprecedented third successive win.

Todd Harris met with 1993 Hall of Fame inductee Dan Fouts to discuss the big game. Dan, who played 15 seasons in the NFL, heaped praise on Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes. The quarterback, who will be leading the team in his fifth Super Bowl, could win his fourth ring before hitting 30 – a better record than the great Tom Brady. Mind you, Brady won it seven times in total, so Mahomes has some way to go.

“[Mahomes has] been able to overcome injuries too,” Dan said, “I think that's as impressive as anything. He’s had some ankle problems. He runs smart, though, and, he doesn't resist the pass rush that's inevitably going to take him down… Will he be able to overtake Tom Brady? That, we'll have to wait and see.”

Kansas City may have the headlines as they go for the “three-peat”, but Philadelphia could spoil the Chiefs’ party. They have serious talent in their ranks with the likes of Saquon Barkley, AJ Brown and the man who’s maybe not had quite the recognition he deserves, Jalen Hurts. Dan told us that if they can contain their opponents, notably that impressive quarterback, the Eagles can cause serious problems.

“Your fastest guy is your defensive end there or your linebackers. So yeah, containing Mahomes in the pocket. Number one, it will frustrate him a little bit because he likes the big play… And he makes most of those big plays, the dramatic plays outside of the pocket and really the difference makers, whether he's completing a pass or whether he's running for the first down.

“It's tough for me to go against Andy Reid and the Chiefs,” he continued. “But I want an upset. I want to see Philadelphia continue. You know I want to see Barkley bust off a couple of runs.”

In a wide-ranging interview, Todd and Dan delved into college football and discussed the 2025-26 season in the NFL They also considered the global reach of the Super Bowl, which generates interest all around the world. What’s the secret of the NFL’s success? Fouts reckons that canny marketing helps this exciting sport grab attention.

“The owners are really billionaires for a reason now. They're smart. Okay. And they they've done a good job of forming a club. The club being the National Football League where they share revenues, they take care of each other. You don't see a lot of bickering… The PR machine is very smooth, and, I think because the game is played just once a week, that it gives people, you know, a chance to dissect Sunday's game and then look forward to next Sunday's game.” But that doesn’t guarantee domination of the sporting market.

“What shocked me, though,” Dan told Todd, “is that the NFL Europe didn't take off, and it was not successful… It was a good, exposure but people want the real thing. And if the NFL comes over to Germany, they bring a real thing. And that's what the fans want to see.”

Those games sell out in hours. And you can bet that the fans across Europe, as well as everywhere else, will be tuned in for a possibly historic Super Bowl on Sunday.
